"very informative" 2010-08-25By
Christopher K. Koenigsberg (Norman, OK USA)
Disclaimer: I am reviewing an advance copy that I received for free through the Vine program.
This book is very useful to me, so I would recommend it if your experience is similar to mine. I have been taking pictures for many years, since the days of "analog" film, but I've never studied photography and I didn't know many of the technical details before reading this book. I don't think anything in the book is really specific to any one brand or model of camera, so I don't agree with some of the other reviewers on that point. The author DOES mention his specific camera models but that has no bearing on the usefulness or generality of what he's writing about, in my opinion.
So for instance the discussion (with examples) of ISO settings is useful to me, in dim vs bright light and shadows vs overexposed regions, in conjunction with shutter speed and "f stop".
There is also a lot of useful discussion (and examples) of how to compose better pictures simply by choosing the background, time of day, what goes in the "frame", what angle to shoot from, etc.
I usually let the camera do its own thing in "auto" mode these days, but I have experimented with manual settings from time to time, and with the encouragement of this book, I will try more often.

Ranieri AmbrosioAt the end you will be disapointed with your compact camera and want to buy a DSLR.
"Not What I Needed" 2010-08-16By

Focused on difference between SLR's and compacts and also on his specific compact. Got some good general ideas but limited direction for a camera newbie like me to get started. Someone with more picture-taking experience may get a lot more from this book.
"For the intermediate range photographer..." 2010-07-17By
Eliza Bennet (The Ozarks)
A fast read, with far more pictures than text, Confessions of a Compact Camera Shooter by Rick Sammon will appeal to those who already understand cameras, and want to add compacts with good outcomes. I'm a beginner, so in the forward of the book there were acronyms that I had to google, and throughout some of the information was too far advanced for me. On the other hand, some of the information seemed very simple, and easy to grasp. While I'll probably never use RAW files or HDR Pano, there were lots of tips that I can use, for both shooting and printing. A fairly useful, easy to read guide book geared more for the intermediate photographer.
"Nice photos but a little short on real help." 2010-07-10By
Tom McCoy (Lawton, OK USA)
This guy is a little full of himself. Nice photos, very little in real knowledge for a beginning photographer. If you don't have a Canon G10 forget it. Yes there is some good info but not much..save your money get "A Short Course in Digital Photography" instead.
